I like Amuro as a character. But as a person, I have some unsavory opinions of the dude. Sure he’s a tragic person pushed into the center of a horrible war at a very young age but that doesn’t make him less responsible for his actions. He speaks as though that only he understands the heart of humans but through out the series, he never put himself close to the people he want to be with. He’s grown far from the white base crew, never truly confessed his love nor guilt of killing Lala. His idea was to prevent more destruction and chaos, by fighting wars but never truly put himself to the change the power balances of earth and the space-noids . I’ll go out to of the way to say that Char Aznable was the closest person to understand him because of the way their lives were ruined by war. But don’t get me wrong, I like gundam because of the wrongs of Amuro. I like that the series carefully depicts that Amuro is not a hero nor a savior, but just an another soldier that’s good at piloting mobile suits

Some people have no choice but to fight. But that doesn’t make the choice any easier to accept. To kill for survival is always just, but tragedy lies in the fact that those you take the lives of are also killing for the same reason. Therein lies the tragedy of war. Amuro’s “it’s war” is a testament to the death of his innocence, and his acceptance and compliance to the unfair circumstances he’s in. “It’s not right for my son to wave a gun around like that” is a mirror of his past innocence and the innocence his mother still sees in her son. I feel like UC did a really good job at conveying its message, and it hasn’t be captured in same way in Gundam since
