there's a scene in Being John Malkovich where Cusack tries to hit on Keener and gets shot down, then goes home and makes a Keener puppet and creates a scene where the puppet he made of himself convinces her of the brilliance of his art... and that's roughly how I imagine everything Sorkin has ever written

This was one of my favorite shows!!! I was so sad when it was cancelled. Matthew Perry was excellent in this, i think it’s his best role and i’m saying that as a die hard Friends fan. I never understood why it was canceled until i read his book.

You forgot the biggest problem: it’s a show about comedy that isn’t funny. They spent several episodes hyping up this “Crazy Christians” sketch that turned out to be a weak retooling of “Modern Major General,” and that was supposed to be “biting satire” that had the country up in arms. Sorkin proved he can write good behind the scenes TV with “Sports Night” and he just tried to copy and paste here without bothering to learn how comedy is made. Ultimately, the show didn’t understand its own premise. Sorkin even mocked it in a cameo on 30 Rock years later.

The problem is every Aaron Sorkin show is the same. “Don’t You Know How Serious This Is!” works fantastically in the West Wing and ok for The Newsroom and ok for Sports Night. But there are very few things people are willing to believe are really that serious without the characters seeming insane.
