@hackorwackofficial: Why does “police officer” change so much depending on whether the costume is being sold to a boy or a girl? 👀 A real female police officer doesn’t need a skirt, sequins or frills to communicate “police officer.” So why do we start adding those things when we’re designing the costume for little girls… and then watch the female versions become increasingly s*xualized as the age goes up? This isn’t only something parents have noticed. The American Psychological Association’s Task Force on the S*xualization of Girls examined how girls and women are portrayed across media, advertising and products marketed to children. The report discusses research on Halloween costumes specifically, including findings that boys were offered a wider variety of costume types while girls’ costumes overwhelmingly emphasized physical attractiveness. The APA’s larger concern is the repeated cultural messaging girls receive about appearance, s*xiness and where their value comes from. Its task force concluded that s*xualization is associated with negative consequences across areas including cognitive functioning, mental health and healthy s*xual development. I’m not saying a skirt or one Halloween costume causes those outcomes. I’m asking why we’re changing the costume in the first place.
