Hi, it's Juliana! There are two main types of empathy. The first is cognitive empathy. “I understand that you're hurting.” The second is emotional empathy: the ability to feel what other people are feeling. Generally speaking, narcissistic people have cognitive empathy. But they lack emotional empathy. So if you've ever gone through something like this and thought: “How can they see me crying and just not care?” That's why. They can see you're hurting. But they can't really feel your hurt with you. Think of it like seeing a random person crying while you're walking in New York City. You might notice them. You might even do a double take. But you don't know this person. You don't have an emotional connection to them. So, at least for most people, their crying isn't going to completely stop you in your tracks. You're going to be more concerned about: Crossing the street safely. Figuring out where you're going. Getting there on time. And that's how narcissistic partners tend to respond to your emotions in relationships. They can see you're crying, overwhelmed, or completely falling apart. But they don't care enough to stop what they're doing and respond to your pain. This isn't because you're being too sensitive, too emotional, or too dramatic. It's because they lack emotional empathy: the ability to feel what other people are feeling. If you need someone to talk to about all of this, you can always send me a DM or schedule a session with me. My team and I help people heal from narcissistic abuse, and many of us have experienced it ourselves, so we're here if you need us. To your healing, Juliana ❤️‍🩹
