I taught my 3 daughters the following: We’re all flavors of ice cream, you don’t have to like every flavor, and they don’t have to like your flavor either, and some will have their favorites. Stay away from the flavors you don’t like.

Parents need to let kids experience friendship, good and bad, and learn from it. You can’t protect your kids from pain and trying will only make life harder. I’ve had some terrible friends but do have some great and positive memories from those same friendships that I wouldn’t want to lose even knowing the eventual pain this relationship caused me.

My daughter was a Chinese grown up in a very white community. I felt her pain and spoke to her with your context. It didn’t work because rejection is an undeniable pain. The more she got pushed out the more she wanted to belong. Luckily we helped in supporting her with the best education she could possibly have. She now recognizes her own value and has truthful friends.
