As someone who has straight hair, my hair doesn't look like this. No matter how much I scrunch no matter how much product I use. My hair will always end up going flat, unless I'm putting a curling iron to it, or actually curling it with rods, or some type of curling tool.

When you have straight hair you can’t force a curl and make it stay. My daughter has board straight hair. Wet dry even 5 minutes after using a curling iron or crimper. Her hair is so fine it won’t hold a curl to save her life. She loves it and that’s all I care about. People hate keeping curls is wild to me. Love your hair & be proud of it but don’t tell other people about their hair or how to wear it. You don’t want people doing it to you so give them the same respect. (Referring to the lady in the clip saying she’s forcing curls.)

Shit like that that left me thinking I had frizzy straight hair growing up… No, I just had curls that I didn’t know how to manage/maintain until my mid 20s.

The absolute audacity of telling a woman that we’re not allowed to use a special brush or five products just to tame our frizz and help our curls out, is literally beyond me. Can you imagine if someone said that to them?

My mom is 100% British islander and my dad is 100% Ashkenazi Jewish. My curly hair means a lot to me because it’s the only ethnic feature I have from my dad. I look so white but I’ve never felt like I belong anywhere. 😮‍💨

I feel you, I am 31% Scottish and 19% Mexican Indigenous. My hair is just like yours, I have to tame it with products but it is curly and my hair texture is coarse than I thought. I just cut it in a pixie, and discovered after all this time how different & non-white it is. I am starting to think its my Scottish heritage because my grandmother and further back had tighter curls with coarse texture too. I mean there were black people in Scotland too. So who knows at this point.

I'm Scotch-Irish and English, pretty muc entirely, and this is how my curls are. People forget that wavy hair is a category and it's defined by the ability to easily go straight or curly. Curly hair exists on a spectrum, as most things do. And like you said, most of us were never taught how to care for curly hair.

I’ve never once heard someone use the excuse of “you are using too many products, you don’t have actual curls” when in reality I have used products on black women’s hair and I have had to go up to at least seven or eight different products because everyone’s hair texture is not the same and each hair texture has a different curl pattern. What works for some does not work for all and this is coming from a cosmetologist that has been licensed for 8 years now. I’m tri-racial, white/native/black and honestly more racist people than I have walking into a room with my two different phenotypically presenting cousins.

I’m white as a ghost. I can make vampires jealous because of fair I am. I have curly hair. My sister tried to teach me when I was younger but I didn’t care. By high school my hair was up everyday except picture day. I brushed it as little as I could get away with becuase it hurt. I have thin fine hair but it is still curly.

My hair is super curly in parts and super straight in parts probably due to the years of not knowing how to take care of it and straightening it

This argument is so weird to me. First, pretty much every woman for years has been encouraged through images or directly that straight hair is “beautiful”. The fact that more woman are wearing their natural hair should be embraced. Second, I hate the term “forcing” the curl. It’s just encouraging the curl, either for volume or definition. Third, I was never just showering and leaving the house with straight hair. It required product and tools that arguably “forced” my hair into a style. After 40, the texture of my hair changed. I’ve always wanted curly hair (forced it many times with perms and every curling technique under the sun) and now I have wavey hair that I will put every product under the sun on to wear it every single day like this. No one owns curly hair or straight hair, there are simply different textures of hair. Embrace how you want.

I have very curly hair (3c), but to get a more uniform curl I have to manually manipulate each piece. So yes, you can have curly hair and stilo have to use products and manipulation because sometimes curls are just aholes 🤣🤣

Ppl do not understand the diff btw enhancing the nature texture with product verses forcing, using a curling iron.

As a Filipino-American, with Spanish and German grandparents, I never understood these boxes placed by society. There is a world where we can be everything. Loved this post! You exist and you’re rocking those curls! 😍
