I got a job as a new grad I was not qualified for. I interviewed so well they said “we’ll train you to do this job”

Culture is a massive part. I don't remember any of the work related questions from my interview, all I remember is the excel test, and the hiring manager and I talking about excel e-sports and how much we love excel and shortcuts. It was the fastest I've ever been hired and its my favourite job I've ever worked at.

Years ago I was the manager of a retail store. During an interview I asked a young lady what she felt was her greatest accomplishment. She replied “treatment”. I thought she meant for an illness, it was for addiction. She spoke about wanting to be a motivational speaker for people who were still in the grasp of addiction. She had zero retail experience, I hired her just based off of the way she embraced her dreams and learned from her experience. She was one of the best employees I ever had. I even promoted her after a while to a key holder responsibility.

This. I recently had an interview and was asked if I was willing to work on line in a kitchen, and I said yes to show initiative and willing to learn.

I once got a job because the manager was running late (road conditions), so they sent one of my future coworkers to baby sit me. We talked about video games and cats. She ended up sending me on my way when the manager still wasn't there after 30 minutes, and I was hired because of my personality.

I'm not a big campaigner for socialising at work, as a millennial miser, but let me tell you in an age where we all gotta take whatever job will have us, you will not survive a miserable job if you dont fit in with the community there. If your job exposes you to triggering shit on a regular, if youre battling CI or trying to work w a disability, you better hope your colleagues and boss have your back.

My volunteer history got me across the line when it was down to me and another person who had a very similar education and career history to me. My volunteering was not to deliberately build my CV, I enjoyed what I was doing and did it for fun. It was a hobby and it just happened to get me across the line. That said I don’t think all of my hobbies would work in my favour, discernment is key because I doubt my reading smut would go well in an interview for a corporate job lol.

As someone who in the past worked as a receptionist and admin roles - always chat with whoever greets visitors. I’ve been asked my opinion when in those roles!

I made my way from a junior copywriter at a small agency to a comms officer at a university in 7 years on nothing but a community college diploma for a program that doesn’t exist anymore and some sales experience (really helpful for getting ppl to vibe with you quickly). I’ve talked myself into every single job I applied for and all of them had something in it I hadn’t done before.

I'm in graphic design so I need to bring a portfolio of my work to an interview. in every interview I've had we spent like 5 mins looking at my work then 30 mins just chatting. my personality is what got me my jobs.

I had an interview for a job that I had no experience with, I didn't get the job but was offered another job because I made a good social impression.
I'm not a social person but I can play the part. I'm very likable when masked

Yes, I worked for a small firm that grew into a very big firm. The hires done before we were large enough for an HR dept fit into the company culture much better than after when off the wall questioning was no longer allowed. No illegal questions just ones more about the person and more small talk

It now makes total sense to me when I see these people complaining that they have applied for 130 jobs and not landed any of them 🙄

We're 10 years ahead, we learned these f***ing boomers care about professionalism. We try to give them a heads up so they don't struggle for as long as we did and are attacked

You also need to dress for the job…. You can be eccentric and yourself during your off time.
