Yamoah, was a Ghanaian highlife musician, bandleader, composer, and mentor who became particularly associated with the classic song “Serwa Akoto.” He was an important figure in Ghana’s early highlife era. Yamoah founded Yamoah’s Band and spent an important part of his career in Kumasi after an earlier period in Accra. His repertoire included songs such as “Serwa Akoto,” “Saman Me,” “Fa Asem Kye,” “Onantefo,” “Obido Me,” “Sika Mpe Rough,” and “Nya Asem Hwe. Beyond his own recordings, one of his major contributions was mentoring younger musicians. He gave Nana Kwame Ampadu an important early opportunity in the 1960s, before Ampadu went on to establish the African Brothers Band. Yamoah was also credited with grooming musicians including Agyarku, Smart Nkansah, and Lee Duodu. Nana Kwame Ampadu In 2008, Yamoah received a Certificate of Merit at the MTN Ghana Music Awards in recognition of his contribution to Ghanaian music. P.K. Yamoah died in August 2014 at the age of 86.
