I know the most logical answer is they ate it, but I went to a dinner once where they had cut the cake up for us (which was fine) but when the family asked for the rest of the cake, they had cut the rest and sold it to other customers. Which was, aside from anything else, illegal.

I remember at my wedding reception after the meal we went into the other room for the cake cut.... out came OUR SLICED WEDDING CAKE 😳 The kitchen decided to slice it up without us first cutting it, then had to cobble some of it back together for at least a photo, and it did NOT look good. Better believe I got reimbursed for that cake from the reception venue!!!

Oh they definitely ate it. The rest of a cake doesn't just "disappear". If they dropped it they would have said something and wouldn't serve it. So they definitely ate it.

Worked at a place where we cut the cake for our tables, but we would bring the cake out first and let them have their moment for blowing out candles, pictures, etc before taking it to the back to cut it. We always put any leftover cake back in its container/to go box and returned to them. This is outrageous!

22 years in the restaurant business we keep customers cakes in a separate fridge away from our products and we get them to cut and serve thuer cake themselves so there's no cross contamination.
