There's a Supervolcano Hiding Under California Everyone knows California has earthquakes. But hiding in the Eastern Sierra is something far bigger and far scarier: a supervolcano. One that once erupted with almost unimaginable force, buried much of a continent in ash, and here's the part that'll get you, it is still alive today. 🌋 This is the Long Valley Caldera. Most people driving through it or skiing there have no idea what they're standing on, because about 760,000 years ago this exact spot unleashed one of the most violent eruptions in the history of North America, an explosion hundreds of times more powerful than Mount St. Helens that blasted out so much molten rock and ash the ground itself collapsed inward, forming a crater 20 miles long, and flung ash as far as Nebraska. But this is no dead relic: deep below, molten magma still churns, and it has been waking up. In 1980 the region was rocked by a swarm of powerful earthquakes, and geologists noticed the floor of the caldera slowly rising, bulging upward, pushed from below by magma on the move. And there's an even eerier sign: on the slopes of Mammoth Mountain, deadly volcanic carbon-dioxide gas seeps up out of the ground in such amounts that it has killed entire groves of trees, leaving ghostly dead forests, and has even claimed human lives. That gas is the supervolcano, quietly breathing. And here's the wildest part: sitting directly on top of this restless giant is the town of Mammoth Lakes, a world-famous ski resort where every winter millions come to ski on the slopes of a living supervolcano. Scientists monitor it around the clock, it's currently at a normal alert level with no eruption imminent, and thankfully the odds of a giant eruption any time soon are very low, but make no mistake, deep beneath the beautiful Sierra, the giant is still stirring.
