@nourishingapothecary: If your baby or child has eczema, their skin is only one part of the picture. Eczema is a complex inflammatory skin condition, and while supporting the skin barrier is incredibly important, in clinic we also want to understand what else may be contributing to that child’s presentation. That can mean looking at their digestive health, diet, potential food triggers, immune function, allergies, environmental exposures and the health of their skin barrier rather than simply focusing on what we can put on the skin. There is a growing body of research exploring the relationship between the gut microbiome, immune development and atopic conditions such as eczema. That doesn’t mean every child with eczema has a “gut problem”, but it is one of the areas we may consider as part of the bigger clinical picture. And importantly, eczema treatment should be individualised. If your child has been prescribed topical corticosteroids or other medication, speak with their doctor before changing or stopping treatment.
