What looks like a contradiction is actually the coexistence of different valid lineage traditions (Chöluk). Both directions are deeply symbolic and considered correct within their respective contexts:The Left-to-Right Standard (Clockwise/Circumambulation): This treats the altar as a sacred object you are honoring. Just as you walk around a stupa or a temple clockwise, you move across the bowls from your left to your right. This is the most common standard across the Nyingma and Gelug schools. The Right-to-Left Standard (Deity Mirroring/Mandala Layout): This treats the altar as a living mandala. As you observed in the Drukpa Kagyu tradition, the practice often prioritizes the layout from the perspective of the deity's right side, or arranges offerings to mirror the inner channels of the subtle body. Intent matters more than direction. In Vajrayana, physical actions are merely support systems for the mind. Great masters emphasize that the inner attitude during Yönchap is far more critical than whether your hand moves left or right. The real "rules" that everyone agrees on are: Mindfulness: Pouring slowly and smoothly, like a stream of oil, without splashing.Cleanliness: Keeping the bowls meticulously clean and spaced evenly (the width of a grain of rice).Generosity: Not leaving a bowl completely empty on the altar (which symbolizes poverty of spirit), but keeping a splash of water in them as you move down the line. The best advice is to pick one method and stick to it. If you have a specific root guru, follow their exact movement. If you are practicing in a Bhutanese Drukpa Kagyu context, continuing the right-to-left method you observed is perfectly auspicious.
