Sarah Elago says Mary Jane Veloso’s family was “very happy” after learning that President Bongbong Marcos had granted the former overseas worker an absolute pardon. Elago said she immediately called Veloso’s parents and siblings to share the news, saying they had long fought for her freedom and are now hoping she will be released as soon as possible. She called the pardon a victory for the people’s movement, but noted that the fight for justice for Filipino migrants does not end with Veloso’s case. Veloso was on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking, but the execution was deferred on request of the Philippine government for humanitarian reasons, saying Veloso was a victim of human trafficking.
