Trump did something that Presidents rarely do, personally walking out to the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews to greet Xi's plane. When Trump landed in Beijing, back in May, Xi sent his vice president, Han Zheng, to greet him. Chinese state television's coverage of the Andrews arrival did not show the two leaders shaking hands at all, instead lingering on the children with bouquets of flowers.

I really have to disagree that Xi isn't a self made man, his father was purged in the cultural revolution, he was sent to the countryside and had to work his way up from post to post to rise to power. he wasn't even allowed to join the CCP at first and his first posts were literally in tiny towns, he went from a local government, to province admin all while having to learn how to manoeuvre with all the party bureaucracy to becoming the leader of the worlds other superpower.
