The "In Dreams" scene in David Lynch's 1986 film Blue Velvet is one of the most famous, unsettling, and celebrated sequences in cinema history. Lynch was deeply influenced by Roy Orbison's 1963 song "In Dreams," reportedly listening to the track repeatedly while developing the screenplay and shaping the sequence around its emotional contrast with the film's disturbing imagery. The use of the song also had a complicated production history. Securing permission to use Orbison's original recording was reportedly difficult because of concerns about placing the romantic ballad within such a dark and violent film.
