charged subatomic particles can only travel faster than light in another medium. Even then, they don’t actually travel faster than light, it’s just that the light wave as a whole slows down. The individual Photons are still moving at light speed (because they cannot slow down), but they are constantly absorbed and reemitted by atoms in the water. This allows for electrons to “travel faster than light” despite not actually traveling as fast as the individual photons

For those who don’t get it, let me explain. Light is the fastest moving thing in the universe… in a vacuum. But since this is underwater, the light actually isn’t moving at the maximum speed, but is instead moving a little slower than usual. Then electrons moving at 99% of the speed of light (light only moves 75% of the speed of light in water) meaning they are technically faster than light (only in water). When the electrons move faster it causes this blue color, also known as Cherenkov Radiation. In fact, astronauts actually experience this inside of their eyes! When high energy cosmic particles move through the liquid inside of their eyes, they’re moving faster than light can in that liquid. This causes bright blue flashes inside of their eyes

Everyone in the comments is misunderstanding. Nothing can travel faster than light, yes, but that is only true in a vacuum like outer space. In certain mediums, like water, light is slowed down, which allows for other particles that are less affected to comparatively move faster than that light.

People genuinely think they know everything. Light in a vacuum is the max speed everyone talks about, however in water light can only travel at 75% of that speed meaning it can be overtaken, in this case electrons.

Guys nothing can travel faster than the speed of light when it’s in a VACUUM meaning light slows down slightly in other mediums like water so that other things can go faster than light in WATER but never in a vacuum
