Prime Minister Albanese said that Labor's Online Safety Amendment (Digital Duty of Care) Bill 2026, is a "very positive move" in response to "misinformation, disinformation and increased polarisation." And who gets to decide what this "harmful" misinformation and disinformation is? Under subsection 25C, the Communications Minister, currently Anika Wells, could determine what material, conduct, or combination of both may cause “serious harm”. A Government Minister gets to decide what is “harmful”. How long before conservative opinions, political criticism or views the Government dislikes are labelled as misinformation, disinformation and/or “harmful” and then censored? Australians should never have to ask the Government for permission to speak freely.
