POPE LEO XIV FLIES ACROSS FRANCE ABOARD A SPECIAL AIR FRANCE A321 Pope Leo XIV is traveling across France aboard a specially prepared Air France Airbus A321-212, registration F-GTAU, temporarily renamed “Cité du Vatican.” The aircraft carries Vatican City markings, including the coat of arms next to the forward left door and the special name along the fuselage. The journey began on September 25 with an ITA Airways A321 from Rome-Fiumicino to Paris-Orly. From there, Air France took over the papal flight programme, operating three special sectors: Paris-Orly–Lourdes, Lourdes–Metz and Metz–Rome-Fiumicino. On Monday morning, the papal A321 departed Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées at 07:40 for Metz-Nancy-Lorraine. During the flight, two French Air and Space Force Rafale fighters flew alongside the aircraft as part of the escort. Pope Leo XIV also spent more than half an hour inside the cockpit, speaking with the flight crew while the aircraft was en route to Metz. Air France configured the A321 with two cabins for the mission. In addition to the Pope and his immediate entourage, the aircraft carries a delegation of more than 70 cardinals, bishops, Holy See officials, security personnel and Swiss Guards, along with more than 80 accredited journalists. The flights have official state-flight status, giving the aircraft dedicated handling and priority procedures. More than 100 Air France employees are involved in the operation. The aircraft operating the mission is F-GTAU, an Airbus A321-212 normally flown by Air France. The first papal Air France sector, Paris-Orly to Lourdes, operated as AF4004 on September 26. Air France has a history of carrying popes. John Paul II flew aboard an Air France Concorde in 1989 and an A310 in 1996, while Benedict XVI used Air France A321s during his 2008 visit to France.
