@agrotonomy: We grow 40 cucumber plants on 4 aeroponic towers inside a custom-built grow cage. When growing cucumbers on towers, it is important not to plant more than one cucumber plant per level, as their root systems can become quite large. We also leave the first level of each tower empty to improve airflow and aeration around the base of the plants. For this crop, we grew Excelsior pickling cucumbers. These are parthenocarpic, meaning they can set fruit without pollination, and gynoecious, meaning the plants produce almost exclusively female flowers. That combination makes them especially productive, because nearly every flower has the potential to become a cucumber without relying on pollinators. Although we grew ours outdoors, Excelsior is also an excellent variety for greenhouses and indoor growing environments where pollinators may be limited or completely absent. We grew these cucumbers specifically to make pickles. This variety is best harvested at around 4 to 5 inches long (10 to 13 cm), but quite a few of ours grew beyond that size before we picked them. So instead of wasting them, we sorted the cucumbers by size and made different batches of pickles accordingly. #cucumber #farming #gardening #pickles #agriculture
