@philosophyminis: There are only two kinds of thinkers. The first sees the world in terms of one theory that can explain absolutely everything, and the second thinker thinks that these theories are probably just wrong. This is what the philosopher Isaiah Berlin argued in 1953. Berlin argued that if you look at the history of philosophy and how people think today, you will find two different kinds of people. You have hedgehog people and fox people. A hedgehog knows only one thing. They have a single organising idea about how the universe works, and they use that to explain absolutely everything. So, if you're talking about politics or relationships or history or human nature, they all keep returning to their overarching principle. The good thing about hedgehogs is that they can see patterns that other people can't. They take a galaxy of scattered facts and turn them into one coherent picture. The danger, though, is that if you think that one theory can explain everything, eventually you start forcing everything to fit your theory. The fox though is different. A fox knows many things. They borrow from different traditions, different theories, and different disciplines, and they change explanations according to the problem and are much more comfortable with saying, 'I don't know.' But the problem with foxes is that if you collect hundreds and hundreds of different perspectives without ever committing to one, you end up having lots of information with no way of actually understanding it. And so for Berlin, the most interesting people are those who oscillates between a fox and a hedgehog. And so perhaps the question shouldn't be whether I am a fox or whether I am a hedgehog, but it should be whether if sticking to one way of thinking is actually making me miss something important.
