Introduction Sociology is the scientific study of human society, social relationships, and institutions. Its development as a discipline is credited to early scholars who introduced theories, concepts, and methods that help us understand social life. Auguste Comte (1798–1857) Known as the “Father of Sociology,” Comte coined the term sociology and developed positivism, emphasizing the use of scientific methods to study society. He divided sociology into social statics (order) and social dynamics (change). Herbert Spencer (1820–1903) Spencer applied evolutionary theory to society and developed Social Darwinism. He compared society to a living organism (organic analogy) and believed in the “survival of the fittest.” Karl Marx (1818–1883) Marx developed Conflict Theory, focusing on class struggle between the bourgeoisie (rich) and proletariat (workers). He argued that capitalism leads to exploitation and advocated for a classless society. Emile Durkheim (1858–1917) Durkheim established sociology as an academic discipline. He introduced social facts and studied suicide, showing its social causes. He also developed the concepts of mechanical and organic solidarity. Max Weber (1864–1920) Weber developed interpretive sociology and introduced Verstehen (understanding social action). He studied bureaucracy, authority types (traditional, charismatic, legal-rational), and linked religion to capitalism. Georg Simmel (1858–1918) Simmel focused on small group interactions and social patterns. He contributed to formal sociology and emphasized everyday social relationships. Talcott Parsons (1902–1979) Parsons developed structural functionalism, viewing society as a system of interrelated parts. He introduced the AGIL model: Adaptation, Goal attainment, Integration, and Latency. Robert K. Merton (1910–2003) Merton refined functionalism by introducing manifest (intended) and latent (unintended) functions. He also developed Strain Theory in criminology. Charles Horton Cooley (1864–1929) Cooley introduced the looking-glass self, explaining how individuals develop self-image through interaction with others. George Herbert Mead (1863–1931) Mead, a founder of symbolic interactionism, emphasized communication and symbols. He explained the development of the self through the “I” and “Me.” Harriet Martineau (1802–1876) Martineau, the first female sociologist, translated Comte’s work and focused on gender inequality and social reform. W.E.B. Du Bois (1868–1963) Du Bois studied race and inequality, introduced double consciousness, and advocated for civil rights and equality. Ibn Khaldun (1332–1406) A forerunner of sociology, he wrote Muqaddimah, studied social cohesion (asabiyyah), and analyzed the rise and fall of civilizations. Summary and Conclusion These scholars shaped sociology by developing major theories, introducing key concepts, and establishing scientific and interpretive methods. Their ideas remain relevant in understanding social behavior and addressing societal challenges, especially in developing societies like Nigeria. #sociology #scholars #SocioScript #goviral
Sri Lankan Patties Recipe Sri Lankan patties are a very famous and much-loved savoury snack in Sri Lanka. They have a crispy, golden pastry shell and can be filled with fish, tuna, chicken, or simply potatoes. In Sri Lanka, patties moulds are commonly available in most shops and make it easy to shape and seal the patties. If you don’t have a mould, you can use a round cutter to cut the dough into circles. Add your favourite filling, fold the dough over, and press the edges with a fork to seal. For perfectly crispy patties, the dough should be very stiff and firm, and the oil temperature is also very important. Ingredients For the Dough 2 cups plain flour ⅛ teaspoon turmeric powder 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon sugar 2 tablespoons oil Water as needed Filling Use any filling you like. Fish, tuna, chicken, or potato all work well. Method Add the flour, turmeric powder, salt, sugar and oil to a bowl and mix well. Gradually add water and mix until all the flour comes together and there are no dry bits. The dough should be very stiff and firm. Do not make a soft dough. You don’t need to knead it much, just bring everything together into a stiff dough. Cover the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes. Take a small, lemon-sized portion of dough and roll it out thinly with a rolling pin. Place the rolled dough on a Sri Lankan patties mould. Add your favourite filling to the centre, then close the mould and press firmly to seal. Remove the excess dough around the edges. If you don’t have a patties mould, use a round cutter to cut the rolled dough into circles. Add the filling to the centre, fold the dough over and press the edges firmly with a fork to seal. Heat the oil well. When you place the patties into the oil, it should immediately bubble around the patties. The oil should be hot enough to create bubbles, but not so hot that the patties burn before the dough cooks properly. Fry until golden and crispy, then remove and drain well. Serve hot and enjoy these delicious Sri Lankan patties with your favourite filling. #petis #srilankanfood #fishpetis #srilankan #streetfood
