Classic innovators dilemma that is ripe for disruption by agentic commerce players. Very few companies who have created walled gardens can protect their business from competitors. But Amazon has created such strong value props for the buyer and are so innovative, tech forward I think they can survive the onslaught from other companies by launching their own agent platform. Any loss in margin/top line due to cannibalization from agents (reduced basket size, etc.) will likely be offset by monetizing their agents, increased aws usage possibly. Despite their investment in anthropic, I do see Amazon either embracing open source and developing their own OR forking one of the frontier models so that they can build some proprietary stuff on top of it.

Kevin Fee :
Agents can still use Amazon using computer use. Might as well get in line. Yes, agentic commerce is better for consumers because it can compare many options and don’t get sold on something else it sees. However, in time, agents will make up a larger portion of the economy and growing the pie. So Amazon should get on board.
