Gianni laughed. A lot. He was the one who made everyone else laugh. He was the one you went to for advice. The one you called when you felt alone, scared, lost or afraid to sit with your own silence. He was the strong one. The levelheaded one. The father of the friend group. The protector. The one who showed up. The one who saved everyone else. And none of those things made him immune to a suicidal crisis. I think this is where we continue to misunderstand suicide. Going into a suicidal crisis does not automatically mean someone has a diagnosed mental illness. It does not mean there was a long, visible road leading everyone around t Among people who died by suicide in 2023 whose circumstances were known, only about half had a known current diagnosed mental-health problem. For men, it was less than half. Only about 1 in 5 were known to have told another person they intended to die. Read that again. Because we keep telling people to look for the signs. But what happens when the person you love isn't showing you the signs we've been taught to look for? What happens when he is still laughing? Still working. Still making plans. Still giving advice. Still being everyone's safe place. Still being the strong one. A suicidal crisis can exist inside a human being whose life, personality and entire history cannot be reduced to that crisis. Gianni's final day does not get to rewrite the 24 years that came before it. He was funny. He was strong. He was rational. He loved deeply. He protected people. He gave people somewhere to go when they couldn't sit alone with themselves. Maybe that's part of what we need to start talking about. Maybe sometimes there isn't a perfect sentence someone could have said. Maybe sometimes the person in crisis doesn't know how to explain what is happening inside of them. And maybe Gianni didn't have to say anything at all. Maybe all the advice he gave, all the love he poured out, all the people he protected, all the times he showed up and saved someone else... maybe that was always what he needed someone to give back to him that day CDC data also shows that suicide can involve multiple interacting circumstances including acute crises, relationship problems, physical health problems and conflictsand specifically cautions against reducing suicide to one factor. In the CDC’s 2023 National Violent Death Reporting System data, only 50.3% of people who died by suicide and had known circumstances had a current diagnosed mental-health problem. Among men, it was 46.2%. The CDC itself states that approximately half of suicide decedents did not have a known diagnosed mental-health condition at the time of death only 20.8% were known to have disclosed suicidal intent. A recent or impending crisis within roughly two weeks of the death was documented in 31.3% of cases with known circumstances. #stigma #suicidaldeology #MentalHealthAwareness #breakthesilence #crisis
