Our #CMAConservation Conservator of Asian paintings, Ika Yi-Hsia Hsiao, has been working on the treatment of Chinese 16th-century, Ming dynasty album leaves, currently privately owned. To address some of condition issues including old insect holes and accretions, Ika is washing the painting using traditional Chinese painting conservation techniques. After significant testing to ensure the media is stable, Ika begins by using a Chinese goat brush to gently apply water onto the painting’s surface to release the degradation components in the paper. Then, Ika can remove these degradation components with rolling clean white towels onto the surface. After repeated washing, Ika is then able to carefully remove the three layers of old linings on the back of the painting with special tweezers under transmitted light.   Featured artwork: Rising Kites, Leaf from an Album of Figure and Plant Paintings, 1521–93.
