Jeff, can you clarify the normal age to have your first memory? My first memory is about age 5 maybe six. Is that normal?

A divorce attorney spends their entire day dealing with failed relationships. He's an expert on what to avoid in marriage. Anything else is just his opinion.

My son (3) had a massive potty training regression when his dad suddenly ghosted all of us. It only ever started to get better when his dad finally saw him again 4 months later. Even after that it took well over 6 months to get little buddy back on track. So yeah, it does affect them even if they can't remember.

My parents go divorced when I was 8. I have almost no memories of my home life before that. I'm positive them being divorced WAS best, however... it was a shotgun marriage because they got pregnant with me. Tell a 10 year old who "knows" they are "the reason they got married" and now they're divorced that it's not their fault. I blamed myself until I was around 20 because in my developing head, I was the reason they got married, so if I was never born, no divorce and no heartache for them because they never would have gotten married. So fun. 🙃

So much nuance, sometimes low conflict marriages are the ones that train kids how to be dismissive, indifferent, and covertly disrespectful to their future partners. The kid grow up thinking “this is fine, this is love” the parents aren’t fighting but they aren’t modeling care and love, or how to repair. But they could see a lot of eggshell walking and fawning.

Still better for kids if parents divorce when kids are young. Much better than growing up with two parents who don’t get along, but tried to make it work “for the kids”. For example, happiest kid i knew in high school lived with his grandmother because his parents divorced and went off to their new families. He did whatever he wanted, and had an A+ average while playing rugby. Parents are not very useful past age 7, unless they are both rich and generous. 😂

This is why I saw my Counselor for 10 years and a marital Counselor for two years before divorcing and agreed with my ex-husband on coparenting, speaking positively about the other parent and making room for both parents, and the kids lives as the transition happened. There’s no way a five year-old and a two-year-old can understand so you explain to them the things they need to know in the healthiest way possible and if you’re not sure, there’s a lot of great professionals out there to walk you through it

The legal profession and the judicial system is the most dysfunctional, toxic crap I have ever experienced in the last four years, the mentality of lawyers and judgment that they think they can be experts in a field that they have never studied or have degrees in blows my mind. I don’t understand where this mentality comes from and I don’t understand why people who do not have discernment and proper intellect are allowed to be lawyers and judges, …. As a moral/ ethical professional you have to refer to professional experts in their respective fields to make decisions for children, … medical, psychology, the complexity of domestic violence relationships, etc

Consulting a divorce attorney on parenting through divorce is wild. Their goal is either getting more child support or paying less child support. After all they created the 2-2-5-5 or 3-4-4-3. Which is 50/50 yes but a mindfuck for a kid. Or how about the 1 year in California, 1 year in Nevada custody agreement. Ask me how I know.

Appreciate this call out. lawyers and family court I would argue are worse than any parental conflict. Why? Because conflict =billable hours and $$
