Save this and share it with someone who gives themselves a harder time than they deserve. How often do you announce that you’re tired, work is annoying or nothing is going your way? Now ask yourself: how often do you say, “That was a good moment,” “I handled that well,” or “I’m proud of myself for trying”? When the difficult moments get a running commentary and the good ones get silence, your account of the day can become harsher than the day itself. Here’s the science behind the shift. In experiments by psychologists Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough, people who regularly listed things they were grateful for experienced improvements in several measures of wellbeing. The clearest finding was an increase in positive emotion. Deliberately acknowledging the good can make a difference to how you feel. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) Other research found that sharing positive experiences with someone else was associated with greater positive emotion and wellbeing, beyond the experience itself. Giving a good moment a conversation can help you get more from it. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) These studies don’t prove that saying one positive sentence aloud transforms your life. They support the principle behind this practice: deliberately notice and acknowledge what’s going well. Speaking it aloud is a simple way to pause long enough to do that. Try it like this: 1. Choose three everyday moments: your morning drink, a meal and finishing work. 2. Find one specific positive that’s actually true. 3. Say it aloud and take a few seconds to appreciate it. “This coffee tastes good.” “I stayed patient in that conversation.” “I didn’t feel like training, but I showed up.” Specific matters. You’re recognising something real, something you can believe. And on a difficult day, you can say both: “Today was hard, and I’m glad I asked for help.” Appreciation leaves room for honesty. Try it for a week. Each evening, ask yourself: what did I acknowledge today that I would usually have overlooked? You don’t have to wait for an extraordinary life to appreciate an ordinary moment. What’s one good thing you can give a voice to today? Tell me below.
