Addiction has been on my mind heavy recently, because it’s everywhere. Addiction was and is the monster hiding under my bed. It’s in so many families, people, and places… it appears when we never thought it would. It lies, manipulates, and takes people we love and turns them into strangers. Addiction has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’ve lost so many people to addiction because it is relentless. My father could have been one of those people. My father put my mother and I in unimaginable situations because of his addiction, it consumed our life and drained us. He was high during his wedding day (I was 10), my softball games, my school field trips, etc. The burn marks in the carpet from him nodding off smoking cigerettes, the constant fighting, the disappearing for days…. I just wanted my dad. He drained my mother of every penny she owned. He would take me to random places and leave me in the car for hours while he was getting high. I’ll never forget this one house he would take me to, he’d leave me upstair with two other little girls while they were getting high downstairs… it was flea infested so bad that we brought it to our house. My mom would pick me up from highschool and we’d take cans of food to the homeless shelter for him, even then it still wasn’t enough. He was still getting high somehow. I will never stop thanking Jesus that my dad was strong enough to get clean, and if it wasn’t for my mothers strength to kick him out and let him hit rock bottom I know for a fact he wouldn’t be alive. This is my story, and those years in my life from childhood-teen are so blurry…but my dad put in years of work to get where he is today, to help others that are struggling with addiction, and to rebuild the relationships that matter in his life. Thank you for getting clean for yourself, even if we weren’t enough. I love you dad. #childofanaddict #addiction #addictionrecovery
