Are you actually ovulating or are you just assuming you are? If you’re trying to conceive, understanding when you ovulate is much more useful than simply assuming it happens on day 14. Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovary, but the timing can vary between women and even between cycles in the same woman. One of the things I encourage women to start understanding is their own ovulatory pattern. Cervical mucus is particularly useful. As oestrogen rises approaching ovulation, cervical mucus typically becomes wetter, clearer, slippery and more stretchy. This is a sign that you’re entering your fertile window. Basal body temperature gives us different information. After ovulation, progesterone produced by the corpus luteum has a thermogenic effect, causing basal body temperature to rise. So the temperature shift doesn’t really tell you you’re about to ovulate. It helps confirm afterwards that ovulation has likely occurred. This distinction matters when you’re trying to conceive. Ideally, we want sperm present before the egg is released rather than waiting for a temperature rise and then starting intercourse. And this is why I don’t love relying on a calendar prediction alone. Your cycle length, cervical mucus, LH testing where appropriate and your temperature pattern can all give us different pieces of information about what your ovaries and hormones are actually doing. If you’ve been trying to conceive and you’re unsure whether you’re ovulating consistently, or you want help understanding your cycle properly, our fertility naturopaths work with women and couples Australia wide via Zoom as well as from our Sydney clinic. You can book a free discovery call to find the right practitioner for you at www.nourishingapothecary.com
