@armedforcesfacts: George Marshall expanded the US Army from 200,000 soldiers — ranked 18th in the world, behind Belgium — to 12 million in 4 years. Churchill called him the true organiser of Allied victory. After the war he invented the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953, the only professional soldier ever awarded it. Douglas MacArthur promised 'I shall return' to the Philippines in 1942. He did — in October 1944 with 700 ships and 174,000 soldiers. His island-hopping strategy bypassed 800,000 Japanese soldiers, starving them of supply rather than fighting them directly. Henry 'Hap' Arnold built the Army Air Forces from 20,000 personnel and 800 aircraft in 1939 to 2.4 million personnel and 79,000 aircraft by 1945. His strategic bombing concept — destroy industrial capacity, not armies — defined the air war over Germany. His organisation delivered the atomic bombs. Omar Bradley commanded 1.3 million soldiers from Normandy to Germany, the largest American field command in history. Known as the Soldier's General because he visited the front and ate with privates. He died on active duty on February 8 1981 at age 88, still drawing his five-star pay, still technically serving. What made these five different: they wrote the doctrine for air power war, carrier war, amphibious assault and atomic war simultaneously. None of these had established doctrine. They invented it as they fought. #wwii #generals #military #History #usa

Patton was bumped off right after the war. Wasn’t a politician like Ike and Bradley.

I don’t think they’re being forgotten though, btw Patton was never awarded the fifth star, he was a four star at the end. The MacArthur love and hate comments, just like when he was alive 😂 some things don’t change. I know this is Army list but Nimitz, King, Leahy, Halsey!

these were 5 generals. Usefull in someway, but for the entire war, they are quite useless.

Nickname #7 :
MacArthur was a terrible, arrogant primadonna of a general who occasionally hit on a good idea, but whose record is highlighted by some spectacular failures rooted in his belief in his own tactical genius.
