@drbeckyatgoodinside: Your teen walks in the door after school, and before their shoes are even off they're checking Instagram or Snapchat. Part of you might be thinking, you were just with these people all day, what could you possibly have missed? I've caught myself having thoughts like that too. But for our kids, there isn't really a moment when the day with their friends ends. It keeps going, in their pocket, into their room, sometimes late into the night, and that's not something they did wrong, it's just the world they're growing up in. So it might help to think less about the phone itself and more about where there's still room in their day to be off it. A car ride with no screens, yours included. A walk to pick something up. Making dinner next to each other. You probably won't see anything change right away, and you might just get a shrug or a one word answer. That's okay. You're not looking for a big conversation, you're just making sure there are a few minutes here and there where no one else's opinion is coming in first, including yours. I go into this on my new episode of Teens & Screens, my series for parents trying to figure out tech with their kids. You can watch the full episode on YouTube now.

Dr. Melanie - Psychologist :
As a psychologist, I love the reminder that time together doesn’t have to produce a big conversation to count. A teen can help make dinner, say very little, and still be welcome company. We don’t need to turn every quiet moment into “Tell me what’s wrong.” Sometimes it’s simply, “Want to keep me company?” I share more on my page about connection, pressure, and making room to simply be 🤍

This is exactly what worries me about social media for young ones! What can we do as parents to help with that? Ideally they wouldn't use it, but when it's so common I think stopping one child would also harm them because they would not belong...
