As a CFO for a variety of organizations, I have never had a candidate bring an outside drink to an interview. Not once.

If HR type is rejecting a person because of coffee instead of competence, they are not doing their job. They should be fired.

I can’t for the life of me figure out why someone would need an ice coffee in an interview. 😂

Thank you! I'm in engineering, and we couldn't possibly care less what beverage the person has unless it's like alcohol which is prohibited on our work site 😂 We care about whether they can do the job

It’s bad advice to tell people to do it or say it’s OK though. Someone did their own unscientific survey on LinkedIn. Most HR/Recruiters do not care and it would make no difference to them, over half. I’m in that camp too. Don’t care. However, something like 30% said it would not be a good look and it did matter. You have desperate job seekers out there, that need paychecks and health insurance and don’t have the luxury of waiting for the perfect workplace. There is a lot more at stake for them. Is it worth the risk is the question. You’d advise that person to test the waters given they have a lot riding on it at home. Maybe they have kids. You’re telling people it’s ok to take the risk?

You are 100% right that the boss hiring you to be an analyst, associate, ect won't care about your icee coffee. Where you're wrong is telling someone who is looking for a job to bring it for the point you said. Its HR that cares about this things and you don't know who will be in that room for your viewers next interviews. I almost didn't get my last job as an accountant for a manufacturing company even though my boss thought I was the best candidate because HR didn't think I would fit the culture because I was closer to Danny Tanner (Full House) than I was Dan Conner (Roxanne). If people are looking for a job, why take the risk if you don't know who is sitting on the other side of the table.

You’re 100% right about HR caring about appearance more than substance. But in terms of hiring managers it’s highly dependent on the environment. A casual environment where the focus is on hard skills, absolutely, bring the ice coffee nobody cares. A formal client facing role where soft skills and how you present yourself matters, then hiring managers ARE going to judge you having a half drunk plastic cup of coffee with a straw sticking out and dripping on the desk.

Similar role here. Applicants present their skill sets and experience and we can assume they know the job. But we can’t see their work ethic and actual abilities until they start and we get output. There are things that set applicants apart but interviews are really a gamble. We collect data, analyze it, ask questions, and conclude we select the right person but we don’t actually know. Part of the interview process as whole is how the applicant presents themselves. Especially now that resumes almost identical and are done with AI.

People of the world. Everyone telling you to bring the iced coffee is either not giving you advice for a big girl job or doesn’t have your best interest in mind. We have got to stop this rhetoric. It might be okay for some people at some companies in some roles but it is absolutely not okay for more than the few who are okay with it. It shows you cannot budget your time and do not have a high EQ.

absolutely! bring the coffee! all HR and recruiting does is read the interview feedback as to why hiring teams reject candidates. your colleagues might not "talk about it".... but do they talk about the illegal stuff they are written in the scorecards? just like you feel like he can't do your job, you guys can't do ours... otherwise we wouldn't constantly be doing unconscious interview training 😮💨

That’s really bad advice. I am a recruiter in HR. I hear hiring manager complain about a lot less than coffee. Just because you and a couple of others don’t care doesn’t mean that’s the norm. We aren’t the decision makers nor are we involved with the interviews but I hear complaints all the time about candidates

HR and recruiting is looking for people who can blend into the culture of the company. That’s their job. They usually don’t make the final call to hire, they are passing people through that show the basics to success with the company

The theater kids who didn't make it on Broadway and ended up in the HR Gang only care about a stage performance. The HR Gang has a strong Elvis Costello "Goon Squad" vibe.

Yeah - I won’t hire someone who can’t “read the room.” Bringing in a needy comfort drink to an interview is damn stupid. [Like]

Bringing in iced coffee to an interview shows a lack of self awareness. HR will be the one receiving the complaints about this person in the future. it sounds like you think that someone's qualifications puts them above others.
