I taught my kids, "try twice then ask for help." I am not helping you before you try at least two times. More than two times trying something and frustration forms and shut downs happen. You can try things by yourself. Figure it out if you can. Research it. Learn it.

I don’t need a psychologist to tell me what it is. It’s the IDGAF syndrome. I think it really started to just truly manifest when I hit about age 50.

@Amanda Lane:I was a latchkey kid, born in 1989 and living with a single mother and without an abandoned father and the term latchkey isn't meant to make anyone feel bad or for me to gain pity. it's to indicate that a key was latched to my neck... but yeah other than attributing this solely to a very reductive version of when Gen x supposedly existed I do agree that being left alone often was exactly what enabled me to learn control

I was born in 71. I was raised partly by a single mother, partly by a single father and partly by my grandparents. My parents were divorced when I was 10. As generation X I adapted to everything. We had survival tactics. My father was also in the military so I adapted two different ways of living.

By 8 dad was gone for most of the year on military ops. Mom worked on rotating shifts and was out enjoying herself most of the time she wasn't working. I didn't see a parent but a few hours a week. Raised myself and my sister

3 kids, single mom who worked all the time - we rarely saw her. We were each given five dollars a week to live on which paid for school lunches. That was the one meal that we didn’t have to figure out. Started driving when I was 12, first job and first car at 13. got through life by trial and error. Still wonder sometimes how we survived our teen years.
