@flashlight_official66: It is mostly true that after the 1966 coup, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah did not live with his immediate family in Conakry, Guinea. When he was overthrown on 24th February 1966, he was away on a peace mission to Vietnam. By the time he realized what had happened back home, the military had taken control of Ghana, and his return was no longer possible. Nkrumah was offered asylum in Conakry by President Ahmed Sékou Touré, who not only welcomed him but symbolically named him co-president of Guinea. While Nkrumah settled into political exile there, his wife, Fathia Nkrumah, and their three young children were evacuated to Cairo, Egypt. Why didn’t the family join him in Guinea? First, security was a major concern. The 1966 coup was tense and unpredictable. There had already been assassination attempts on Nkrumah during his time in office. Keeping Fathia and the children in Ghana or moving them into another politically charged environment posed serious risks. Cairo, being Fathia’s home country, offered familiarity, protection, and stability. Second, Guinea itself was not exactly a calm refuge. Nkrumah remained politically active in exile and was determined to regain power in Ghana. Conakry became a base for his Pan-African vision and political strategy. It was not an ideal environment to raise young children. Third, there was the belief at least initially that the exile would be temporary. Nkrumah hoped he would soon return to Ghana. What was expected to be a short stay turned into years. As his health deteriorated, he was later moved to Romania for medical treatment, where he passed away in 1972. Despite the physical separation, Nkrumah reportedly remained in close contact with his wife. The distance was political and strategic, not necessarily personal. History often highlights the dramatic fall of leaders, but behind those events are families forced to make painful decisions for survival. In exile, Nkrumah lost not only his presidency but daily life with his children. #ghanatiktok🇬🇭 #fyp #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp #kwamenkruma
