@thehomeruler: Who are the Black Palestinians? Afro-Palestinians are a longstanding Palestinian community with African ancestry, including families with roots in Sudan and other parts of Africa. Before October 2023, an estimated 11,000 Afro-Palestinians lived in Gaza City’s Al-Jalla’a district, in an area reported as “Al-Abeed” (Harat al-ʿAbid), a name connected to the Arabic word for slaves/servants and the region’s complicated history of slavery and African migration. But what does the name actually mean? Where did Gaza’s Afro-Palestinian community come from? And is discrimination against Black Palestinians documented in Gaza? This video looks at Afro-Palestinians, Black Palestinians, Al-Jalla’a, Al-Abeed/Harat al-ʿAbid, African ancestry in Palestine, and the historical legacy of slavery and migration in the region — without claiming that all Afro-Palestinians descend from enslaved people or that all Palestinians share the same attitudes. #AfroPalestinians #BlackPalestinians #Palestine #Gaza #AfricanHistory
