@nbcla: The iconic Santa Monica Pier sign is going away, but not for good. The pier is one of the most popular places in Southern California, and the sign has been the front door to it since 1941. Later this fall, crews will dismantle the sign and take it to Las Vegas for a facelift. According to the city, its historic character will remain intact when the refurbished sign returns late next year. Planned improvements include rust removal, repainting and structural repairs.
