As a hairstylist this is inflated and not completely transparent. $20 for rent per customer is crazy even the highest suites at only $1200-$1600 (which is far too expensive) with only 5 clients a day at a normal work week is only $12-$16 and most booth rents are cheaper than suites mines only $650 and the highest I’ve seen for booth is $800, and even with shampoo and conditioner being $100 bottles with those same numbers should only be $2, the processing fee can be set for the clients to pay and even then it’s only 3% at the highest, your benefits and insurances are set monthly fees so pulling from each client would end up with profit margins, and liability insurances for hairstylists are usually 1 time yearly pays that are usually less than $200 for the whole year. As a hairstylist it’s not wrong to charge your worth for whatever you think it is but don’t hide behind the curtain of all these being astronomically hindering when most of your numbers all have profit and aren’t realistic to the set numbers of what you are saying you aren’t seeing as profit. It’s okay to just want to charge more if that’s what you see your worth is at but don’t act like you’d be broke if you charged less. You just like the lifestyle you have because of what you charge.

Preach!!! I literally designed a calculator that tells you what you have to charge to make x amount an hour when you take into account all of those things.

My husbands grandma was charged 1400 by a plumber for 2 hours of work. Her invoice showed that materials cost 65 dollars. No one ever questions this but has no problem bashing us. It’s sexism.

I don’t believe one person uses five dollars worth of shampoo. Not staying $75 is wrong for a haircut but five dollars for a shampoo. I think that’s a little far-fetched.

I’d rather you argue that your skill of the service is worth the price. Or at least that shampoo at $5 is more realistically shampoo, conditioner, styling product, etc all totaling $5. If you’re buying liter size products and in bulk at a discount you’re likely getting 100 washes out of a shampoo bottle and that’s not $5 per wash.

This only applies to independent stylists. Those are choices and costs that come with being self employed, not expenses every stylist has. Commission salons can offer paid time off, health insurance, disability and retirement benefits, and pay for licenses and education. Different business models have different costs and benefits.

We absolutely do not need to explain this to anyone. Our expenses & profit is no one’s business but our own.

Girl we aren’t complaining that haircuts are $75, we are complaining that haircuts are $190 minimum and when we show up they go “ohh your hair is thick we’re gonna add $45 and if you decline we’ll cancel your appointment and charge you the full amount :(“

The only trade that gets no benefits health insurance or anything plus the only one where we have to pay a rental fee and carry our own liability insurance policy

Columbus hair stylist at Charles Penzone where I worked have it good lowkey, they make up the difference from what you don’t make if that makes sense and they provide health insurance maternity leave (I think) (after a year working there I believe) and 401k benefits

I don’t blame stylist for charging what they do. I personally cannot afford a haircut at that price. So I learned over the years how to cut my own hair rather than bash stylist.

Why do this? Why explain all this to someone who simply isn’t willing to pay your prices… they aren’t your target market… let them go.

To also add. Combs, tools, tool maintenance, capes, styling products, if you sell retail product coast. Towels Cleaning products there’s literally so much money invested in our profession, if we don’t charge accordingly we become in debt. If a job isn’t paying enough you simply find employment elsewhere and then who gonna do your hair.
