@mollypelletier.rd: Don't let this misinformation be a distraction from the things that you actually need to do to heal. Low stomach acid is actually extremely rare, and there's no documentation that this is a root contributor to GERD. Low stomach acid can occur in older individuals, those with untreated H. pylori, and those in the context of SIBO, but even if you do have low stomach acid, taking betaine HCl, chel, or apple cider vinegar isn't the solution and can be extremely unsafe. I've had so many patients come to us at FLORA who are damaged by taking these acid supplements. We need to support your body's natural production of stomach acid. If you are someone that has low digestive juice production, we don't need to supplement with acid in order to resolve this. Getting stuck in the minute and constantly trying to figure out if you have high or low stomach acid keeps people stuck and distracts them from what they actually need to do to heal, which is often a temporary low-acid healing phase. Strategic supplementation with alginates and slippery elm, nervous system regulation, microbiome optimization, and mineral and vitamin repletion. Follow for more evidence-based reflux guidance from a reflux dietitian that has helped thousands of patients and healed her own GERD. I have so many free resources for you in the link in my bio as well, like my free reflux reset program. #GERD #reflux #LPR #acidreflux

Betaine Hcl worked for me at one point. It’s definitely not a “take for the rest of your life” type of thing. But if you’ve been on PPIs for years and still have really bad reflux, it can definitely help. But I agree that it should only be used for very specific cases, and only for a short time.
