A teenager who spent several hours drinking at a pub and taking cocaine left a pedestrian with life-changing injuries after slamming into him on a motorcycle. Liam Kenny, 19, reportedly necked six pints at The Ship Inn in Hartlepool, on 10 May 2025, before taking his mate’s Yamaha for a spin. He had no licence or insurance and was “travelling significantly above” the 20mph speed limit, “riding dangerously” before he collided with 22-year-old Ryan Cameron. Mr Cameron, who was helping his mum deliver pizzas, is seen on CCTV closing the door to his parked car before waiting to step into traffic. Spotting Kenny approaching, he leans back, but is struck, along with two parked cars behind him, as bits of the motorcycle were scattered along the road. Members of the public rushed to help Mr Cameron, who has learning difficulties, as Kenny fled the scene. Mr Cameron was airlifted to hospital with life-changing injuries and underwent emergency treatment. He later required ongoing neurorehabilitation, a highly specialised process usually used to treat strokes and traumatic brain injuries. Mr Cameron suffered a fractured skill, broken jaw and several brain bleeds. Mr Cameron’s dad said Kenny’s actions “boil my blood to this day”. “Knowing that Liam Kenny had left my son in the road after the accident, trying to get up it still boils my blood,” he said, adding that his son is now “totally dependent on his family” and is unable to work. After the crash, Kenny went to hospital claiming he had fallen down some stairs, but when questioned about how much he had to drink, became abusive and left without treatment. He was almost four-and-half times over the legal limit for alcohol and 12 times over the legal limit for benzoylecgonine, which is linked to cocaine use. Kenny was sentenced to 30 months jail and disqualified from driving for 51 months. The owner of the motorcycle, Adam Nixon, 22, was convicted in August 2025 of permitting the use of a vehicle without a licence and insurance, as well as drug driving. He was disqualified from driving for 17 months and ordered to pay a fine and costs.
