@brittany.gillies: My mom and I went to the same Deaf school growing up. Most of our signs are the same, but some are totally different🤍 Back when she was in school, they weren’t allowed to sign in class. They had to speak and lipread, then later fingerspell everything or sign and talk at the same time. So the kids signed in the dorms and hallways instead, and they passed signs down to each other. That’s probably a big part of why some of her signs look different from mine! I love learning her “old” signs. Every time she shows me one, there’s a story behind it🤟 Happy International Week of Deaf People to my mom and to every Deaf person who signed anyway. #aslbloompartner @ASL Bloom
I’ve never see moms sign before. Which state was it?

Wait but then is it hard for older and younger people to understand each other? I had no idea it changed over time!

i have heard that Black Deaf schools played a large part in maintaining ASL after AGB tried to destroy it

This makes so much sense and explains my confusion. I took an ASL class back in the 90’s, a lot signs I know are different than deaf content creators use that I follow.

Reminds me of some Canadian signs I grew up with. Ask her: strawberry, favorite, birthday, secretary, orange

Fascinating how they changed. Now I want a lesson in why they changed. Some make sense, but some don’t.
