The more technical term of this is, the tractor has a differential brake, when the diff lock is not engaged the is differential open. When both wheels are not locked, it is very possible for a one tire to loose traction and the other one to actually spin in the opposite direction and slide down a hill. This can actually happen on a vehicle too without a diff lock. Only differences is, there’s a lot more force holding the tire to the ground.

There are a few tractors that use that same concept with the brake activating diff lock to connect the rear wheels when braking. Some diff locks are actually in the brake pedal travel

Makes sense, so you have 2-4 tires with brake instead of 1-2 tires doing all the holding for the tractor 🚜 (mower 😉)
