@elly.psychologist: You've tried the calm version and the detailed version, walked them through examples, even asked them to picture how it would feel if the roles were reversed, and still they don't get it. When that keeps happening, it's easy to assume your relationship has a communication problem, but the wording is rarely the issue. What's usually missing on the other side of the relationship is the ability to see their own behaviour clearly, to own the impact it had, and to genuinely step into how you feel. Without that, your feelings don't land as information, they land as a threat. So instead of being heard, you're told you're overreacting or too sensitive, that most people wouldn't be bothered, that they wouldn't feel that way in your shoes, or that they only behaved like that because you pushed them to it. Sometimes it's quieter than that, with them turning hurt and fragile, reminding you how much they love you and how hard they try, until you're the one feeling guilty and apologising. Each of these moves, deliberate or not, does the same job of closing the conversation down and keeping the relationship stuck in the same place. Underneath it is usually someone who finds the shame and discomfort of self-reflection so hard to bear that the blame has to land somewhere else. That leaves a relationship where one person is focused on protecting themselves and the other is reaching for connection, and those two aims can't meet. It can be driven by entitlement, where your care is expected as standard but theirs is treated as a favour, or by emotional immaturity, which many people quietly make allowances for because it feels easier to understand. Knowing the reason might help it make sense, but it doesn't reduce what it's doing to you, and the impact is just as real either way. No amount of reading, rephrasing or rehearsing will fix a relationship like this on your own, because you're dealing with long-standing ways of seeing the world, shaped by beliefs that often go back to childhood. Real change in the relationship depends on the other person wanting it, then committing to long-term therapy with someone skilled in emotional manipulation and abuse, and even then progress comes slowly, in small shifts rather than breakthroughs Official accounts and resources: www.ellyanastasiades.com #relationshiptok #relationshiptips #relationshipabuse #relationships #relationshipproblems

He does all this but the main thing is he will brush it off like nothing happened. Like I will try to start a conversation about something on my mind and he will change the subject, or if we’ve had a discussion/argument and it’s not resolved, the next time we speak he will just talk normally as if nothing happened and I either have to let it go or I have to be the one to bring it up again. Literally acts like he has memory loss. Or if I force him to acknowledge it all he says is ‘It wasn’t my intention’ or ‘I am trying’ but there’s no actions to show he is trying. I keep telling myself he just doesn’t have the emotional maturity but at this point it’s a pattern that he’s choosing because he’s clearly avoiding discomfort and accountability. It’s soo draining and you are labelled as the one who is arguing when they are causing it

My narcissistic ex suddenly understood everything the therapist and I had said when I left. Sometimes they know exactly what they are doing. Important message, thank you

I'm not sure. The pattern in my relationship is something along the lines of: I bring up something that hurt me, they shut down, and later bring it up as if I was accusing them of being a horrible human or partner, and I do not consider their depression. I get more and more irritated by being accused of things I didn't say, and at the same time I do feel like my compassion and understanding for them is very limited. They do suffer and I can see that, and I am stuck between anger at not being heard and considered, and guilt and feeling sorry for them

Exactly it isn't a communication issue it's comprehension issue. I had to walk away from people like this..I had in a span of 15 minsutes deflection, my tone wasn't right, changing topic, it was inconvenient time to bring it up, eye rolling whilst calmly trying to repair the relationship. Lacking empathy for someone allows are person to dehumanize you and even though they do hurtful things it almost exempt themselves to sit in victimhood. They feel cornered, attacked, critized by you if you even try to communicate your concerns of their behaviour or treatment of you. It isn't worth the stress, clock it and run.

I remember when I started therapy and was explaining how difficult I found it to get through to my ex partner and how I was always apologising even though they behaved like they were the victim at all times, she started taking me through personality disorder books which touched on dysfunctional empathy etc. I don’t know if my ex will ever realise but it hurt to find out id spent 3 years trying to make a wall feel empathy.

Yup I now understand this and because of this I’m now doing a psychology degree. It’ll not change. You need to walk away as they destroy you. You end up shrinking yourself and bending to fit them. It’s really difficult to get out of those patterns of behaviour post split up. I’m still not over it now. But because of it I spot it now within 2 seconds.

Everything you have just stated resonates with what I went through, realised you could never reason with these individuals, the abuse and manipulation, I felt my kindness was taken for a weakness, we were just going round in circles, it was exhausting.

I wish you see this and realise I need more than just call me back let’s talk, a conversation we’ve had a million times, I haven’t seen anything that shows me it’s going to be different, where’s the accountability or the effort, sending a message saying I owe you a conversation isn’t safe, it’s actually scary. If you can’t see what you’ve done to us and me, there is no conversation to be had. I can’t keep risking my future, hoping one day you’ll wake up and respect me.
