the documentary about Robert McNamera called "the fog of war" is a great complimentary to the PBS documentary, it goes beyond Vietnam and ties the whole military industrial complex to american psychology.

You are so right. Been thinking every day lately how much we are raised to be fascist, it’s conditioning and grooming at all levels of society and people cannot even see it. The normalization of extreme antisociality as good, innate, or desirable has broken so many of us.

Fabulous breakdown!! 👏👏 As a daughter whose father enlisted straight out of high school because he was making 63 cents an hour working on a farm, then ended up in Vietnam, and as someone who served myself, this couldn’t be more spot on. Watching what is happening today and using the Vietnam documentary to put it into perspective… whew. Those of us watching what’s happening with Iran, watching our government lie about how many missiles we have left and how many casualties there actually are, see it. My husband was Air Defense Artillery, so we know some of what we’re being told is bullshit. Then you have Ukraine being left out of conversations about what should happen to THEIR country. America is and always has been the boogeyman they convinced so many people to be afraid of somewhere else.

As usual, nailed it. Understanding the history and ideology is key. This is why Economics is so odd, because it’s typically taught without the context of history and vice versa. And you CANNOT understand one without the other. Example, I didn’t understand that WWI and WWII were essentially caused by capitalism. 😳 Not until an economist that teaches from the historical perspective connected the dots. He said the crowning achievement of 300 years of European capitalism was the imperialist core blowing itself to pieces fighting over territory to grow capitalism. That’s over simplified but essentially we’re in this current mess because Europe and America refuse to let go of colonial delusions in a time when the world has been going thru mass decolonization

I just finished rewatching Watchmen the show with Regina King. It heavily features Vietnam and what would happen if it became the 51st state of America. It also features Tulsa's Black Wall Street. Very timely show despite coming out in 2019

To get an even better in depth understanding of this I recommend the book The Jakarta Method. It focuses on post WWII US strategy mainly in Southeast Asia with extra focus on Indonesia. But it talks about Vietnam and how the government officials knew they couldn't win but as you said they were driven by ego and economic interests. I think the US strategy post Vietnam is especially diabolical because on order to stop the spread of Communism in SE Asia they set their sights on Cambodia and instead of all out war, they installed a dictator (Pol Pot) who knowingly tortured and m*murdered millions of Cambodians. Who was it that liberated Cambodia after US continued to allow such brutal conditions to happen? Vietnam.

I love your content and your perspectives. So insightful and spot on. When you strip down America would rather cut off its own nose to spite its face and to this day it continues to play out.

The war industry- not just the sale and R&D of weapons- but also the financing- is the real reason we attack and war on other countries. If the capitalists couldn’t make millions/billions (and now trillions) from going to war, we wouldn’t
