“Period purity” is so boring. I have an end table from the 1800s opposite a black lacquer credenza from the 1970s. I can’t split them up. They look great together.

Great topic and explanation. Fashion is similar. We grab on to the trends or even microtrends of an era and tend to extrapolate that everyone wore it.

I've always been of the opinion that the quickest way to make your house look cheap is to buy all new furniture. Once the style becomes outdated, it looks so bad. Having different era pieces offsets it. My grandmother knew how to update the right pieces to make everything look modern while keeping all the old pieces. She had nice furniture.

Oh my goodness, yes, that’s always been my problem with period films. Everything looks sourced from the same era. My great grandparents had furniture from the 1800s that were inherited mixed with pieces from every decade since. It’s normal unless you’re moving in to a new home and bringing nothing with you.

My place was on Apartment Therapy a few years back, and I said how much I love colorful 60s/70s design and how Mary Richards’ apartment was an inspiration. But of COURSE I got snarky comments “Your home doesn’t look like REAL 70s” 🙄 No, it doesn’t, it’s not supposed to. But it does look like me 😬

My mom in the big 2026 has a lamp that is a family heirloom. It’s an original Tiffany lamp that -her- grandmother had who passed it to my grandma, who then gave it to my mom in her will. It’s fascinating that it’s now in the same apartment that has an Alexa.

I lived in a silent generation family member’s house for a while and it was such a mish mash of everything they’d ever owned- an art deco table next to a couch with crochet seats, bright yellow kitchen walls with an ikea unit hastily added in when something broke holding matching 1970s flour/sugar/coffee containers. It looked cool because it wasn’t deliberate, it was just their stuff
