LONG BEACH, Calif. – At least one person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down the eastbound 91 Freeway near the southbound 710 Freeway interchange Wednesday night. The crash was reported shortly before 10:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the 91 Freeway and involved multiple vehicles, including a Tesla, according to California Highway Patrol dispatch information. A reporting party told dispatchers that vehicles had been racing before the crash. Initial reports indicated one vehicle struck the right-side wall while another spun out and blocked lanes. The California Highway Patrol later received reports that as many as four vehicles may have been involved. The California Highway Patrol initially reported that three to four lanes were blocked. Officers requested a traffic break before eventually shutting down all eastbound lanes as emergency crews responded. CPR was performed on one victim at the scene; that person died at the scene. The victim was found in the middle lanes of the eastbound 91 Freeway.  The California Highway Patrol also reported that a possible suspect connected to the crash was located on the southbound 710 Freeway transition. No additional information about that person’s possible involvement was immediately available. Traffic was diverted off the freeway while the California Highway Patrol investigated the crash and awaited the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. Caltrans was also requested to establish a hard closure. The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
