Day 5 in the Tanner Horner punishment phase centered on the autopsy and Horner’s own words from jail. Jurors heard from the medical examiner, who testified that Athena Strand died from blunt force injuries with smothering and strangulation and said she believed Athena suffered before she died. The jury also heard jail calls in which Horner admitted killing Athena after hitting her with his truck, denied r*ping her, and spoke about being off his medication. Earlier in the day, jurors were shown letters he allegedly wrote before a 2023 su*c*de attempt in jail, including an apology to Athena’s family. Tanner Horner has pleaded guilty in the killing of 7-year-old Athena Strand, the North Texas child who disappeared from her home in Paradise, Texas, in November 2022 after a package delivery. Investigators say Horner, a contracted FedEx driver, abducted Athena from her family’s property, later lied repeatedly to law enforcement, and eventually led officers to where her body was found. Because Horner admitted guilt just before trial began, the jury is not deciding whether he killed Athena. The only question now is whether he should be sentenced to death or life without parole. #truecrime #courtroom #trial
