@theoneleggedpsych: Your brain would rather mistake a stick for a snake than a snake for a stick. 🐍 That makes a lot of sense for survival. But what happens when the alarm doesn’t turn back off? Part 1: What even is trauma? For education only. This is general information about trauma and is not intended as individualized psychological advice, assessment, diagnosis, or treatment. #OneLeggedPsychologist #AfterTheBefore #Trauma #Psychology #Amputee

Yes, some of the alarms never cease. For me it was very important to learn, that I'm not insane, but that my reactions are normal, ordinary reactions to extraordinary events. And my version of normal was so fucked, I thought everyone was at least a little bit suicidal. Turned out: They aren't, I have a serious mental illness, because people thought they could move their pain onto me via violence. The good news is, therapy is working. Bad news is, I didn't get any help for 26 years and I am only 33. So much of my behavior was shaped by beliefs about myself which aren't true.

I am a devotee and I had a stupid accident. I made a big mistake and fell from 32 feet , early in the morning , working , at the end of the day I was standing on my feet , completely in shock and dissociating of the crazy day I had, don’t know how I made it , but I made a great recovery, only took me a year , despite being ok , walking , and not disfigured , I can’t help but feel stuck in it . I just can’t get past my error… I remember being free falling like it was slow motion , I remember the impact , I never blacked out ( only on the ambulance ) , but my brain can’t deal with the momment of my error , I can’t remember exactly. It’s bugs me so much ! It’s been 3 years , and starting to realise trauma is a really big deal, I wish I felt in control . I’m a lucky guy and I’m thankfull for how well things turned out .. and how I dealt with all , but yessss I do feel stuck . Whenever I see someone in danger of tripping on the street or stupid little things that hurt people , I certainly do react and feel really much more reactive now !

I first learned about this explanation of trauma from "The Body Keeps the Score" which is a very insightful book, but also so brutal. The stories in that book... 😥
