Im danish and we do this too! For my perspective it mostly happens because the family didn’t plan for you to eat with them. Often staying at friends places ended around dinner time, if it weren’t planned you were eating along, but sometimes you could stay and yes then not eat dinner with them cause they didn’t buy or cook food for you? Families often only cook food for who they know are eating there and if they weren’t informed that you would be there they wouldn’t have cooked for you, often I would just be offered snacks and then eat late dinner when I came home.

Yes! The truth is that usually there's not enough food made to feed guests, but the family only. Portions are always calculated so food will not be wasted.😅

its also probably because you cant grow as much food in sweden as somewhere like southern europe, in southern parts of europe people just kind of always have a surplus of food, so they have developed cultures that focus on hospitality and sharing food with your guests🤔i guess this applies to southern america too

As a swede I've never experienced this in my life. If you have a guest over around dinner time you've already prepared for them to eat with you.

There’s other aspects to it as well. My mother would often invite my friends to eat with us if we were eating foods where you could easily make an additional portion. It’s not always easy for a household with two parents working full time to include another kid who shows up unexpectedly

It is also a old tradition that comes from the law of Jante. Not to long ago swedish homes didn't have food to spare and if you did have a lot of food you should not brag. When I was young -70-80 everyone went home to eat dinner and then we met up again.

Tbh if they didn’t plan for me to eat there it’s understandable they wouldn’t have enough food made for me.

there's also the aspect that generally we're supposed to be home before dinner, so if the host family eats earlier we'll skip it so we have room for dinner at home.

For me it’s just that my parents expected me to come home and eat. If I didn’t call and ask my parents if I could eat at my friends house, then I would be eating at home
