THE PERIPATETIC SCHOOL A clash not merely between two thinkers, but between two different approaches to knowledge, metaphysics, and the relationship between reason and revelation. The Peripatetic philosophers — influenced by the philosophical tradition of Aristotle and developed in the Islamic world by thinkers such as al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā — constructed elaborate metaphysical systems concerning the First Cause, the nature of existence, causality, the soul, and the structure of reality. Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله challenged many of these foundations. His criticism was not simply an attack on ʿaql (reason). Rather, he argued that sound reason and authentic revelation cannot ultimately contradict one another. The problem, in his view, arises when speculative philosophical premises are treated as certain truths and revelation is then reinterpreted to conform to them. He questioned the philosophers’ use of concepts such as wujūd, māhiyyah, jawhar, ʿaraḍ, universals, causality, and their demonstrations concerning the Creator and the created world. For Ibn Taymiyyah, knowledge is not confined to abstract syllogisms. Human beings know through revelation, sound reason, perception, experience, and the natural disposition (fiṭrah) — each having its proper place. The debate therefore goes deeper than “faith vs. reason.” It concerns a more fundamental question: What counts as certain knowledge, and what happens when philosophical premises are mistaken for certainty? 📖 Darʾ Taʿāruḍ al-ʿAql wa al-Naql 📖 al-Radd ʿalā al-Manṭiqiyyīn A historical debate that continues to raise questions about metaphysics, epistemology, reason, and revelation. “When the foundations are questioned, the entire system must be examined.” ابن تيمية رحمه الله ضد المدرسة المشائية لم يكن الخلاف مجرد خلاف بين عالم وفيلسوف، ولا مجرد صراع بين «الدين والعقل»، بل كان خلافًا أعمق حول مصادر المعرفة، وحدود العقل، وطريقة الاستدلال على مسائل الوجود والإلهيات. المدرسة المشائية، المتأثرة بالفلسفة الأرسطية، تطورت في العالم الإسلامي على يد فلاسفة مثل الفارابي وابن سينا، وأقامت بناءً فلسفيًا واسعًا في مسائل الوجود، والماهية، والعلية، والنفس، والعالم، وما يتعلق بإثبات واجب الوجود وصفاته. أما ابن تيمية رحمه الله، فانتقد أصولًا كثيرة من هذا البناء، ولم يكن اعتراضه قائمًا على رفض العقل من حيث هو عقل. بل كان يؤكد أن العقل الصريح لا يمكن أن يتعارض مع النقل الصحيح، وأن التعارض إنما ينشأ عندما تُجعل مقدمات فلسفية ظنية أو غير صحيحة في مرتبة اليقين، ثم يُعاد تفسير النصوص الشرعية بما يوافق تلك المقدمات. ولهذا ناقش ابن تيمية قضايا دقيقة تتعلق بـ: الوجود والماهية، الجوهر والعرض، الكليات، العلية، القياس المنطقي، حدوث العالم، النفس، وصفات الله تعالى، وحدود البرهان الفلسفي. وكان يرى أن المعرفة الإنسانية أوسع من أن تُحصر في القياسات الفلسفية المجردة؛ فهناك الوحي، والعقل، والحس، والتجربة، والفطرة، ولكل واحد منها مجاله ووظيفته. لذلك فالمواجهة هنا ليست ببساطة: «الإيمان ضد العقل» بل السؤال الأعمق هو: ما الذي يجعل المعرفة يقينية؟ وهل كل ما يُقدَّم في صورة برهان فلسفي هو بالفعل برهان يقيني؟ ومن هنا جاء مشروعه النقدي في كتب مثل: 📖 درء تعارض العقل والنقل 📖 الرد على المنطقيين فلم يكن المقصود عنده إلغاء العقل، وإنما نقد الحدود التي وُضعت للعقل، وتمييز العقل الصريح عن المقدمات الفلسفية التي قد تُلبس لباس البرهان. إنها واحدة من أبرز المواجهات الفكرية في تاريخ الفلسفة الإسلامية، حول سؤال لا يزال حاضرًا إلى اليوم: هل يكون العقل تابعًا لمقدمات فلسفية معينة، أم يمكن للعقل الصريح والوحي الصحيح أن يجتمعا على الحقيقة؟ #ibntaymiyyah #شيخ_الإسلام_ابن_تيمية #philosophy #المشائية #aristotle
