I’m not disagreeing with you btw I’m black myself and I understand your points. Tho I could also see Afro circus in a different way come from someone who loved the movies. Yhe animal in Madagascar are all black/ indigenous mammals and are seen that way throughout. I see Madagascar as a story of reconnecting with your roots after being alienated by the world around you (aka Marty wanting to go to the wild) only for when they all get there to not fit in among their people given how they grew up without their culture for so long, then when they finally return to the zoo in the 3 third movie they can not longer go back since their experience, their lives have changed in such a way that they don’t really feel like they belong there. I kinda see him as black/mixed/ indigenous people that were misplaced when they were younger, having to grow up in the society or place that didn’t have their heritage or culture than leaving, and realizing that they can’t fit in with their cultural heritage because of the way they were raised and are seen as weird or “not black enough” only to find themselves in a circus that accepts almost anyone from everywhere as a family. I can see them reclaiming Afros and making it a good thing, finally embracing that part of themselves that’s mixed, black, and different As if they’re trying to make the Afros being painted as a good fun thing with the rainbows. Though I do understand your points and yeah I can see where you’re coming from. This is just the view I have for Madagascar now and my way of trying to reclaim the idea

I did a whole PowerPoint on the history of clowns. Most Clowns have a lot of overlap with marginalized communities and racism. Jesters were often people who were disabled, for example. We could go all day about what the harlequin is (a cheeky schemer with a black mask). Grimaldi was inspired by more of the Pierrot and harlequin. But many added more racist feature with the “tramp” character or “hobo clown”. Big shoes, dirty appearance, rounded red lips instead of pointed, etc. a lot of clown behaviors and features are from racist stereotypes, and it’s important to acknowledge and avoid them in modern clowning.

I'd argue that even Joseph Grimaldi could've been influenced by racism since mowhawks could be seen as a native american/indian thing. I haven't done your same research, so feel free to correct me but I do think there's merit in showing/thinking even he had biases when creating his clown sona

As a kid, I always thought it was called Afro Circus because he was wearing Afro. I never looked that much deeper into it, but honestly, you’re making a lot of sense

I don't think people realise that a lot of older clown designs are scarily close to Blackface/If you take the time to research and put these two side by side, it seems like they got the design from Blackface. (Not that the originals were influenced, as you said, but especially now that racism has become so normalised, I think Clowns/whiteface clowns are an easy way to pass racism.) Especially with the Afros and the paint around the mouths. I don't like how things that are supposed to be seen as funny/something to laugh at are depicted mainly with Afro hair, or how Afros are used as a running gag/a centre for hatred for a character. I agree it really is that deep, and the fact that more people haven't pointed it out upsets me even more. Thank you for pointing it out! As someone who has an Afro, I really do hate having to look back at the media I saw as a young kid. That same media pushed the hatred I had for my natural hair when I was younger.

When i was in 5th grade I walked into class wearing an afro for the first time. The whole class stared for a sec and then one of my friends sang this song from Madagascar. So this is interesting to watch over a decade later. I dont think it was any ill intentions, we were kids copying what we saw and heard and 99% of my class was black. Its just interesting thinking back on it all.

genuine question what about depicting Black people as clowns? what hair would be the best? i don't know if i would give them an afro or not bc i kind of never wondered what kind of hair i would give a clown seeing i have no interest in clowns but this video was pretty interesting and informative! and i have heard that the modern clown was racist, but i never really looked into it and just kind of guessed why
