Contrary to the famous Devil Wears Prada line about Cerulean blue sweaters, the fashion industry has never been the primary originator of style. A great fashion designer is similar to a great portrait artist. Much of what they do is purely observational. The fashion designer watches people go by on the street. The portrait artists observes the features of their subject. The end product could not exist without the original subject. It’s the way in which a designer incorporates their own interpretation that allow fashion or art to transcend mimicry. This combination of observation + interpretation is a defining quality in the work of someone like a Martin Margiela. It’s also interesting to observe the impact that a social media-powered internet has had on both subculture and style. Where previous generations developed personal style around interactions with a physical environment (their neighborhood, their city, school, etc.), the current era of style is often downstream of social media itself.
